Day 104: Chalk Temporary Color How-to

Hair du Jour Day 104:  April 13, 2012

Chalk Temporary Color How-To

How to do it:
Soak Regular chalk in small amount of water to soften.  (You will only need a few seconds)
Note:  Return chalk to water as it dries out. Cover sink drain so you don't lose your chalk pieces...they get slippery!  I alternated between colors to let them re-soak and soften.
On damp hair, twist a 1/2 inch section from tail to root.  Your hair needs to have texture to it to be able to wear away at the chalk to get it to stay.  You could color forever on straight strands and you would be out of luck.  Even twisted it will take a while to wear the outer layer off of the chalk to get it going (if you are using chalkboard chalk or sidewalk chalk...I haven't tried artists pastels)  After you wear away the outer layer the chalk works nicely. Will eventually turn into a fine paste in your hair and deposit itself into the strands.
Turn the twisted strands to color all sides, then loosen the twist to color on the inside. Color only in one direction or else your hair will turn into dreads.  I recommend coloring from root to tip.  Keep in mind that your chalk will break as you're using it but it can be used until the very last little nub. Spray lightly with hairspray and avoid getting hair wet or brushing it after that. Heat styling is also okay and allegedly it sets the color in better.  I flat ironed my hair gently and it seems all right!  Over time the color has lightened, so it's possible that artist chalk pastels (not the oil kind and no cray pas) will deposit more color without looking like cotton candy.  Such a sweet look!

Time to do it:  About 20 minutes for a few long strands by my face and the tips around the bottom of my hair

Aaaaaaaggghhh! SOOOOOO cute!  I am in love with this right now (and I think half of America is, too) I am so pumped to be able to color my hair and be able to wash it out.  I grew up in the 90s in high school and missed out on the beginnings of punks and goth kids dying their hair crazy colors...I would have looked like too much of a poser back then.  Now is a different story, but I'm a little old to be doing my whole head in a color.  I plan to dig out my pastels to color my hair with deeper pigment.  What a fun trick!

P.S.  I heard you should not:
Use hair putty or gel afterward
Brush hair
Wet hair once it's done
Send me a pic of your hair!  I'd love to see the different colors on different hair colors.  I hear that light hair users may not need to wet their hair to get it to show up (and wetting light hair to do this may make the color stay longer than you intend).  Lucky!

Last little nub...still useful!
Wears down in the middle and makes it really easy to color down the strands of hair.
